CDSSA is very fortunate to have Darcy Irwin as the head coach for the team.
Darcy began his journey with CDSSA when he was a Masters coach for our first swimmer, Kristeen Cooper. He attended the games in Taiwan in 2010 and has never looked back!
Darcy grew up in Yellowknife and resides now in Nanaimo, British Columbia. He has been recognized for his achievements competing in multiple sports; competitive swimming and speed skating. Darcy’s strong coaching background includes roles as Head Coach of the Canadian Downs Syndrome swim team, Head coach of Vancouver Island University swim team, Head Coach of Nanaimo Ebbtides Masters Club, and Assistant Head Coach of Nanaimo Riptides Swim Team. He has extensive training in culture change, inclusion, and diversity and as a consultant in this field, has the skill set to provide support and leadership to clients seeking to lead change within an organization. Darcy is currently a Learning Facilitator with the National Coaching Certification Program focusing on community coaching
When asked about his involvement with CDSSA and Down syndrome swimming, Darcy reiterates that he really enjoys the games that feature multi-sport competitions that truly showcase the incredible talents of the athletes in a variety of sports.
Salle has had the leasure of coaching with CDSSA since 2009 when she attended her first DSISO games in Albuferia, Portugal. The team has grown over the years. She has been coaching since 1989 when their son Wade, who has down syndrome, started swimming with the local Special Olympics swim club. She has her level 2 NCCP with level 3 technical swimming. She has been very fortunate to have attended many Special Olympics regional,provincial, national and world games and DSISO world games over the years. Pretty much hooked on swimming…Go Team Canada!
